And the winner is…

Original Classic Smoked Salmon on plate

… John Ross Jr.

After weeks and weeks of having to keep it under our hats, we can now reveal that John Ross Jr has won one of the most coveted business awards that any UK company can achieve; The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2016.

It became official as of today, when the list of beneficiary companies was released to the public, the result of which has generated much interest from the media.

And, of course, it’s no coincidence that the day in which the winners of a Queen’s Award are announced happens to be the birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. And although the annual awards are always announced on the birthday of the reigning monarch, this one is of particular significance. Queen Elizabeth II is 90 today.

Whilst we wish to take this opportunity to express our delight at winning a Queen’s Award, in this case of John Ross Jr’s success in international trade, we would also like to pay our respects by wishing Her Majesty a very happy birthday from everyone at John Ross Jr.

For those who wish to know more about the Queen’s Award, then we can tell you that it was first awarded in 1966 and that we are amongst an esteemed list of winners that includes Jaguar Land Rover Ltd, Dyson, the Cambridge Satchel Company and Mackays. It is also the second time that John Ross Jr has been presented with the award, having received the Queen’s Award for Export in 2000.

In the meantime, for the next day or so we’re going to bask in our own glory and raise a glass, partnered with some of our award-winning smoked salmon, of course.

What to expect at Cowes Week

Cowes Week kicks off on Saturday and runs through to the 15th August, where weekend sailors and Olympians will be competing in sailing competitions off the Isle of Wight.

Not only is Cowes Week the most well known sailing regatta in the world but it’s also the longest, with the inaugural event taking place in 1826 (making it 31 years older than our traditional brick kilns!).

As well as the racing there’s a vibrant social scene. You can expect parties, live music, acoustic sessions, entertainers, a wide selection of delicious food and drink and a unique festival atmosphere.

When it comes to dining out, Cowes offers an extensive range of places to visit including tapas bars and seafood restaurants, many offering panoramic views of the sea.

From daily fish specials including smoked salmon, Bembridge crab and lobster to modern European dining with a range of fish, lamb and steak dishes in Cowes old town, there’s a culinary option for everyone.

Many popup bars and restaurants also appear during Cowes Week where you’ll find everything from light snacks to three course meals.

It’s a chance to dine out, relax with friends and enjoy the sight of over a thousand boats all heading out to sea, all set against the stunning backdrop of Cowes.

*For our international readers, Cowes is a sailing port town on The Isle of Wight – a small and picturesque island off the south coast of England.

Glorious Goodwood

It’s considered one of the sporting and social highlights of the season and known affectionately as ‘Glorious Goodwood’. Opening on July 28th, the Qatar Goodwood Festival offers a feast of top quality racing, great food and drink, live music and the opportunity to dress up in your finery.

With the world’s top equestrians taking part, race-goers have the opportunity to watch the best the international world of horseracing has to offer all set in the glorious surroundings of the Sussex Downs.

The atmosphere is relaxed and informal – a celebration of tradition and glamour where high society and competitive horseracing come together for five action-packed days. Prize money totals an impressive £4.5 million!

Adding to the whole experience is the chance to enjoy a variety of fine dining options prepared by Goodwood’s top chefs. Enjoy a three-course meal in the comfort of a private box overlooking the race track or try one of the on-site restaurants.

The Sussex Bistro offers contemporary Italian dishes or you can choose from a selection of seasonal dishes in the Double Trigger Restaurant. For panoramic views from Chichester to the Isle of Wight try The Charlton Hunt Restaurant. Fish lovers will love The Horsewalk Restaurant in the Richmond Enclosure (members only).

If you’re taking a picnic, naturally we recommend smoked salmon sandwiches, a light smoked salmon salad with peas and courgettes, smoked salmon with lemon dressing or simply with soft cheese and dill on rye bread.
