And the winner is…

Original Classic Smoked Salmon on plate

… John Ross Jr.

After weeks and weeks of having to keep it under our hats, we can now reveal that John Ross Jr has won one of the most coveted business awards that any UK company can achieve; The Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2016.

It became official as of today, when the list of beneficiary companies was released to the public, the result of which has generated much interest from the media.

And, of course, it’s no coincidence that the day in which the winners of a Queen’s Award are announced happens to be the birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. And although the annual awards are always announced on the birthday of the reigning monarch, this one is of particular significance. Queen Elizabeth II is 90 today.

Whilst we wish to take this opportunity to express our delight at winning a Queen’s Award, in this case of John Ross Jr’s success in international trade, we would also like to pay our respects by wishing Her Majesty a very happy birthday from everyone at John Ross Jr.

For those who wish to know more about the Queen’s Award, then we can tell you that it was first awarded in 1966 and that we are amongst an esteemed list of winners that includes Jaguar Land Rover Ltd, Dyson, the Cambridge Satchel Company and Mackays. It is also the second time that John Ross Jr has been presented with the award, having received the Queen’s Award for Export in 2000.

In the meantime, for the next day or so we’re going to bask in our own glory and raise a glass, partnered with some of our award-winning smoked salmon, of course.

John Ross Jr. in the Press

As well as being ranked highly by Good Housekeeping magazine, our products have made it into a number of other magazines in the run up to Christmas.

If you are looking for smoked salmon with a twist, then we are pleased to have been rated by the Sunday Telegraph for our  tea smoked salmon, which appeared in the November 9th edition of the paper’s Sunday supplement, Stella.

As the magazine reads, ‘Lapsang lends an aromatic flavour to this (John Ross Jr. tea smoked salmon), but the result is a gentle infusion – great if you prefer an understated smoke’

We made it as one of their six best – but what do you think? Give it a try and let us know! We think it is one of our best products.

Stella MagazineJohn Ross Jr. products have also featured on page 41 of the Christmas Parties edition of Square Meals magazine. In a taste test of six different smoked salmons, our Balmoral fillet came up trumps, with an amazing five stars out of five!

We don’t condone the language used, but we think it’s fair to say, it is probably one of our most candid reviews to date. It’s a must read!

We’ve done it! Again.

We’ve scooped a prestigious Great Taste Award for our Whisky Smoked Salmon at the Great Taste Awards 2014.

Our product was one of 10,000 to enter this year’s awards and was judged by a national panel, which included revered foodies such as Masterchef judge and restaurant critic, Charles Champion, BBC Food Programme presenter Sheila Dillon and buyers from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason and Selfridges.

As The Guild of Fine Food, which organises the awards, states ‘Great Taste is simply about taste, not clever branding or smart packaging’. The judges are presented with a spoonful of jam, a pie or, in our case, a piece of smoked salmon, and then asked to taste, confer and re-taste before coming to a decision.

And we’re pleased to say that they’ve made the right one – and who could blame them when it comes to a smoked salmon that’s been slowly smoked in our red brick kilns and infused with Balvenie Whisky to bring a rounded sweetness enhancement to the smoked salmon.

As you can imagine we’re over the moon to receive our fifth Great Taste Award – and look forward to receiving many more!

In the meantime, if you’ve tasted our Whisky Smoked Salmon then you’ll know what all the fuss is about. If not, you can buy a pack here.

Harrods signs exclusive retail deal with John Ross Jr

London’s internationally renowned department store, Harrods, has become the first retailer in the UK to sell John Ross Jr’s critically acclaimed Tea Smoked Salmon with Lapsang Souchong Tea after the traditional Aberdeen smokehouse secured an exclusive deal.

Cured and smoked in traditional red brick kilns, which have been listed by Historic Scotland and date back to 1857, John Ross Jr’s Tea Smoked Salmon with Lapsang Souchong Tea is delicately smoked over a blend of tea and smouldering oak chippings for 24 hours.

Tapping into Britain’s growing demand for innovative smoked salmon flavours and using China’s most famous tea leaf, often distinguished by its smoky aroma, John Ross Jr’s latest artisan product delivers a beautifully smoked flavour and succulent, rich texture reminiscent of how smoked salmon used to taste.

Created to enhance the flavour of the smoked salmon and not as a marketing gimmick, John Ross Jr’s Tea Smoked Salmon is expected to be popular with food lovers who appreciate the subtle tones and nuances of smoked salmon that has been prepared using time-honoured techniques.

The new arrangement, which is part of Harrods’s plan to extend its range of John Ross Jr products, will see the retailer sell the Tea Smoked Salmon in 200g packs for £9.95. The new deal will also see John Ross Jr’s flagship product, the Balmoral Fillet, make an appearance in its newly designed presentation box retailing at £60.

Vicky Leigh, John Ross Jr’s Sales Director, comments: “We love the fact that Harrods takes as much pride in supplying our products as we do in making them, which is why we’re delighted to be a part of what has become an international showcase for excellence. Appreciating a product’s quality and provenance are two vital elements that John Ross Jr and Harrods have in common, which is why I believe that the partnership is a great fit and one that will continue to grow over time. We’re proud of our Tea Smoked Salmon and in my opinion it’s one of the best products we have created.”

The partnership between the Knightsbridge retailer and the prestigious smokehouse began in 2011 when Harrods made John Ross Jr’s signature products available at its iconic food hall. Harrods also retails John Ross Jr’s Traditional Smoked Salmon in 200g packs and sides, Smoked Salmon Pate, Plain Hot Smoked Salmon and Hot Smoked Salmon with Honey and Mustard Seeds.

Bruce Langlands, Director of the Harrods Food Halls, adds: “Harrods welcomes producers who focus on quality and honour artisan techniques. As a family business with over twenty seven years of producing smoked salmon using traditional methods there is huge synergy between the smokehouse and the food hall and we look forward to continue working with John Ross Jr.”
